A feature film by Everett Champion
1. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY (INTRO)
FADE IN:
INT. FRANK’S DINER AND DRIVE-IN - ROCHESTER VALLEY - 9:05AM
Marty walks into a 50’s era retro diner, it’s semi-full but everyone seems happy to be there, the waitresses are up early but seem to enjoy their shifts. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the warm smell of coffee and tea fills the room, and an innocent teenager walks in with a mission: to find the girl from last night.
MARTY HALL, a 19 year-old teen, 5’9, brown curly hair, sporting wire frame glasses, a wrinkled white tee French-tucked into a pair of distressed black jeans, a pair of beaten Stan Smiths, and red lipstick smeared all over his left arm.
Marty passes a few booths filled with people having their breakfast, he checks around the restaurant in search of a blonde-haired girl from the night before. He takes a walk and doesn’t spot the girl, but does spot a semi-familiar face sitting at a booth next to a big window facing the drive-in screens.
OLIVER
HEY MAN, WHAT’S UP? YOU WERE AT THE PARTY LAST NIGHT RIGHT? THE ONE ON 1ST AVE?
OLIVER OAKS, a 19-year old teen, 5’10, black curly messy hair, sporting a wrinkled black t-shirt with a red rose on the top left tucked into a pair of distressed black jeans and a pair of white Comme des Garçons x Converse high-top sneakers. A rose-gold, rose chain hangs from his neck.
MARTY
OH SHIT YEAH, HOW’S IT GOING?
OLIVER
SHIT MAN I’M GOOD - WELL NOT GOOD, BUT I’M STILL HERE, AREN’T I?
MARTY
BARELY BY THE LOOKS OF IT, WHAT’RE YOU DOING HERE SO EARLY?
OLIVER
oh, this is my morning after recovery spot, coffee will wake you right up, take a seat
Marty sits down on the red leather booth seat and notices a card with the text “Table 42” on it.
OLIVER
plus, i’m waiting for my girl - or ex-girl, i don’t really know where we stand right now
marty
oh shit, sorry to hear that
oliver
i’m not. we “break up” every other week, and every week she runs right back to me when she realizes how much she needs me in her life. we meet up here to talk about our problems and eventually kiss and make up, this booth is basically a therapy chair for her
marty
where’s she at then?
oliver
she’s late, but then again she always is, recovering from the night before. You know, that’s the one about her i can rely on…
A waitress approaches the table with a notepad and a pen.
melanie
hey there guys, welcome to frank’s diner and drive-in, my name’s melanie and i’ll be taking care of you today. Can i get you some coffee, you want the usual?
MELANIE GREY, a 23 year-old woman, 5’6, black hair, wearing a 50s-esque waitress uniform with a name-tag pinned to her chest, she is wearing white knee-high socks and her hair is a bun.
oliver
yeah, bring one for my friend here too, what was your name again man?
marty
marty, marty halls, yours?
oliver
oliver oaks, nice to meet you… again
melanie
two double-doubles coming right up, oh by the way, we’re having a special double feature at the drive-in tonight. we’re showing pulp fiction and back to the future, so it’s gonna be a good time. hopefully it doesn’t rain too much before the movie starts though
marty
thanks, will do
Melanie walks away after jotting down their orders and moves on to tend some other customers, smiling at the boys. The sound of her red high heels against the floor tiles filled the room as she walked away to help the next table.
marty
i’m actually waiting for a girl as well, i met her last night… i think
oliver
what do you mean, you think?
marty
well there’s my problem, i don’t remember much of last night, and i woke up at that summer camp near town with this written on my arm in lipstick, and the address for this place in my phone’s gps
marty
oh shit, sorry to hear that
Marty raises him arm from under the table, revealing the words “MEET ME AT 9:05” written on his left forearm in a dark-red lipstick. There is a little heart drawn next to the words slightly covered by Marty’s watch band. The lipstick is dry but is visibly fresh.
oliver
”meet me at 9:05”, damn she even ended it with a heart, do you remember anything else about this girl?
marty
well, i remember she was blonde, and hot as hell. oh, and she had this red velvet lipstick on… i don’t know…
oliver
well tell me about last night, what happened?

BEGIN FLASHBACK TO THE NIGHT BEFORE:
FADE TO:
INT. HOUSE PARTY - ROCHESTER VALLEY SUBURBS - 1ST AVENUE - EVENING
Marty sees the mysterious girl exit from the bathroom and they instantly lock eyes. She smiles and approaches him in a slow, seductive fashion, batting her eyes and pushing her blonde hair over her shoulder. Marty almost drops his solo cup when she begins to approach him.
MYSTERIOUS GIRL, a 19-year-old girl, 5’6, straight blonde hair, elegantly touched with velvet red lipstick and expensive makeup, wearing a strapless red dress with an open back that doesn’t leave much to the imagination, and a pair of red high heels
marty (v.o)
i remember talking to her, taking some shots and she gave me a pill or something… she was in this red dress that matched her lipstick PERFECTLY
The couple is sitting on a couch somewhere in the middle of the party. The mysterious girl is holding his hand and keeps leaning close to his left ear as the two discuss their favourite movies. The girl offers Marty a red pill from her purse, and he cracks a joke about The Matrix. Marty accepts the pill from the girl and they both chase their pill with the alcohol in their plastic cups
marty (v.o)
i remember ending up in the hot tub… i think… and we just talked… i don’t think either of us brought anything to swim in, so we improvised.
Marty and the girl begin laughing and edging closer and closer to each other. After a few kisses to Marty’s neck, the girl grabs his hand and leads him into the bathroom she once came from. After the two kiss intensely against the bathroom counter, the mysterious girl opens the door and spots the backyard. The pair push past the sliding door to the backyard and stumble to the hot tub in the back corner of the yard. Along the way, Marty rips out a few roses from the garden and gifts them to the girl, bowing his head and presenting them as a surprise as if he bought them for the girl. The girl bursts into a wide smile and begins to kiss Marty all over his face and neck. The two strip down to their underwear and help each other into the pool of hot water and neon lights protruding from under the water. The two begin to make out and grind against each other.
marty (v.o)
it was like project x, but then on, total blur. just a bunch of sounds and colours. i do remember running from the cops though
Sirens blare from the front of the house and flashes of red and blue lights illuminate the sky, scaring Marty and the girl. The couple gets roughly changed and runs into the house, still laughing and flirting. The two follow a large crowd as everyone runs out the backdoor of the party and towards the beach down the street.
marty (v.o)
…we were with that group going to the beach but she grabbed my habd and we ran into the woods away from everyone. that’s probably how i ended up at the camp
FADE TO:
ext. echo creek summer camp - ROCHESTER VALLEY - 5th avenue - EVENING
The couple run into the woods, dodging police spotlights and weaving between trees, hand in hand. The couple runs until they reach a sign stating, “WELCOME TO ECHO CREEK, SINCE 1953”, in front of an abandoned summer camp. The moonlight illuminates the campgrounds as it leaks through the branches of the tall trees nestled around the grounds. The young couple spots a cabin in the distance and run inside of the structure to avoid the police, slamming the door behind them, knocking a sign with “Cabin 9” painted on it to the ground.
marty (v.o)
i woke up this morning to the souund of my phone ringing, it was her number. i didn’t answer in time but called back immediately, but she never picked up. i got up and saw the lipstick on my arm, and fouund this address in my phone
Marty awakens in a bed, alone. His hair is a mess, his neck is covered in hickeys and lipstick markings, and a bouquet of hand-picked roses lay on the bed next to him, in place of the girl he met the night before. He goes to answer his phone, but the person on the other end hangs up before he can answer. He notices the message on his arm and is puzzled by the request, and his location. Marty opens his Maps app on his phone and figures out his whereabouts, and that the last destination he searched for was for a place called “Frank’s Diner and Drive-In”.
marty (v.o)
so, i walked back to 1st ave, got in my car and drove here
Marty drives his Jeep down the suburban streets, following his phone’s GPS as it leads him to 5th Avenue, and the diner. He looks down at the lipstick message before heading inside
END FLASHBACK TO THE NIGHT BEFORE:
FADE TO:
INT. FRANK’S DINER AND DRIVE-IN - ROCHESTER VALLEY - MORNING
oliver
wow, sounds like a wild night, kind of wish i met this girl too aha
marty
maybe that’s why she’s so mad at you, you’re trying to meet too many girls and “make friends”
oliver
Well, it’s not like she isn’t friends with a lot of guys either. She knows people all over the world and everywhere we go, guys always think they have a shot with her. Plus, she likes to “test the waters” as she calls it. I saw her with a guy last night but I was too high to see who it was. She’s like every other girl you see on the internet, a little too much skin and not enough self confidence. As dumb as she is, there’s a few things she knows for sure: She know’s red is her colour, she knows diamonds go with everything, and she thinks all men are the same
10. VSCO (FEAT. NICO TK, K DOUBLE D, KRIS KELLY, AND STEVIE DAVIS)
FADE TO:
EXT. “THE PHOENIX” NIGHTCLUB - ROCHESTER VALLEY - EVENING
The mysterious girl is in line to get into a busy nightclub in the heart of the big city. Her makeup is styled, her hair is perfectly curled, and the smell of raspberry vodka stains her breath. She is screaming at a large bouncer that isn’t allowing her and her friends into the club.
mysterious girl
Ew what the fuck? No fuck you, what? My money isn’t good here?
bouncer
i’m not letting you in
mysterious girl
What the fuck, my friends are in there! I’m not leaving, I’ll stay right here
The girl turns towards the group of people standing behind her, waiting to get into the club
mysterious girl
This fucking asshole won’t let me cause I’m too drunk, do you have any idea how much money my parents make? Do you fucking know who I am? You this purse? This is YSL, Yves Saint Laurent motherfucker! Fuck you, fuck you!

FADE TO:
INT. FRANK’S DINER AND DRIVE-IN - ROCHESTER VALLEY - RAINING - MORNING
marty
How’d you guys meet?
oliver
Ah good story, I met her at an art show that my family put on at our hotel, The Black Rose. Real fancy event, suits and shit, I felt like 007 and damn, she looked like a Bond girl. She came with her boyfriend, but let’s just say that relationship didn’t last very long

FADE TO:
INT. BLACK JEEP - ROCHESTER VALLEY - RAINING - MIDNIGHT
Oliver is driving alone in his Black Jeep after a long night out. The reflection of traffic lights and streetlights fill the otherwise empty streets, and Oliver is lazily driving his car, taking wide turns and ignoring every stop sign he sees. His phone is dead so he resorts to the radio to take his mind off his troubles, he lands on a familiar station, 90.5 Aesthetic Sound.
marty
Welcome back, you’re tuned into 90.5 Aesthetic Sound Radio. It’s a warm July night and we’re glad you’re here to join us. It’s a little rainy out, so be careful and take it slow

INT. FRANK’S DINER AND DRIVE-IN - ROCHESTER VALLEY - RAINING - MORNING
marty
To be honest with you, it seems like you don’t really like her at all, why are you with her?
oliver
Nah man, I do love her, she just gets on my nerves sometimes, but I do care about her and want the best for her. We may fight a lot, but she’s my everything, she’s who I come home to when I’m drunk and out of my mind, and I can always trust her. No matter how crazy life gets
marty
You really trust her that much, with all the travelling and guys always hitting on her?
oliver
To be honest, I really shouldn’t, with her past and all, but I do. I know that no matter what happens, she wouldn’t do that to me, just like I wouldn’t do that to her. Those girls I bring here, really are just friends, I could never do that to her. Even last night, this girl from my English class was talking to me at the party, we were flirting but I just couldn’t do it. When we all went to the beach after, she came up to me and wanted to hook up, touching me and shit. I had the chance, my girl would never know. But I didn’t, I can’t do that to her, just like I know she wouldn’t do that to me. I couldn’t imagine what I’d feel like the next morning

She breaks my heart and I break hers. But when it’s all over, we come back to each other because we have to. That’s always how the movie ends you know? The guy never just walks away from the girl, they always walk into the sunset together
After waiting for an hour and drinking a full cup of coffee, Oliver looks visibly impatient. Over the course of this conversation, Oliver has continued to look around for his girl to show up, but no one has shown up. Oliver shrugs and slaps down a $10 bill on the counter.
oliver
You know what man, I don’t think she’s coming, I’m just gonna head out. If you see a blonde girl with an attitude come in looking for me, tell her to call me
marty
Yeah? Alright, I feel you. I’ll catch you around, and I’ll let you know what happens when my girl shows up
oliver
of course man, let me know
Oliver gets up from the booth, daps up Marty, and heads towards the door.
oliver
Oh, and I’m having a party at the hotel in a few weeks, you should come by, it’ll be a good time. Bring your girl
marty
sounds like a plan, thanks
oliver
alright, peace man!
Oliver opens the door of the diner and heads out into the rain, with his phone in his hand.
16B. DISCONNECTED (OUTRO)
With his head down looking at his phone, Oliver steps out into the rain and down the steps of the diner. The temperature immediately drops, and Oliver can feel the cold rain drip onto the back of his neck. He notices a notification waiting on his phone.
oliver
Oh shit, I got a voicemail from... Lucy?
Oliver looks up from his phone to a shocking surprise. The bright morning sky has been replaced by a dark sky of clouds, the parking lot full of cars visiting the diner is empty now, and the red neon lights of the diner windows are the only thing illuminating the parking lot. While the cold rain pours down on Oliver, he starts the voicemail and puts his phone up to his ear.
lucy (voicemail)
Hey um, I don’t know why I’m saying these things, but I need to get them off my chest. The reason I haven’t been talking to you recently or seeing you is because, it’s because I cheated... and I don’t know why and I don’t know what went through my head, I barely knew the guy.
Oliver is frozen in place, he is stuck standing in the rain as he slowly begins to lose feeling in his extremities.
lucy (voicemail)
We met last night at the party, I was high and drunk, and so was he. We started talking about movies or something and we... fuck I’m so sorry... I knew you were there and I was so mad because you were talking to other girls, and I just didn’t care anymore. When the cops showed up, you all ran to the beach like I said, but I didn’t go to the beach. Me and this guy, we ran to the summer camp, Echo Creek I think it’s called, and we stayed the night in one of the old cabins. When I woke up this morning and realized what had happened, I ran away, I didn’t want him to remember me. I was going to meet him after, in the morning, but I just couldn’t, I can’t! Not after what happened, for you, for your sake
Oliver feels a flood of emotions rush through his body. He is unable to move, his legs feel like they have been screwed into the ground, his arms frozen in place by the rain. Something catches his attention though, he’s heard this story before.
Oliver, face drowned in rain and tears, looks up from the ground and turns around. He looks back to the neon lined window that he looked out of an hour ago, and notices that the diner is empty... except for one customer... Marty. Marty sits in the same booth, with a smile on his face and declaration of Lucy’s infidelity painted on his forearm. The stories of his love for Lucy and the night they had, plagues Oliver as he stands there and looks at the man who destroyed his relationship. He listened as Marty described his love for Lucy, his sexual encounter, his future he hopes to have. Lucy wasn’t late, she wasn’t on her way, she was never coming to see either of them in the first place.
lucy (voicemail)
There’s no way to describe how lonely I feel, how depressed I feel. I can’t tell you how much I miss you, because I did something I never thought I would, I’ve never ever wanted to do... you know me better than anybody else in this world, you know I would never do that! Fuck, you see how my parents divorce hurt me, how they cheated on each other and that made me hate them and how much I wanted to just be happy... and be normal. To just get married and just, not have to worry... but I did something that I never thought I would, and I hate myself, I hate myself for it...
Anger fills Oliver as he begins to walk toward the front door of the diner, blood rushing through his veins, fueling the power in his fists. He powers up the stairs, thrusting his foot into every step, with his eyes locked on the door handle. He reaches the handle just as Lucy’s voice perks up in his ear.
lucy (voicemail)
So, I don’t know if you ever want to talk to me again and I don’t know if you ever wanna see me again... Fuck I’m so so so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m sorry... call me back okay? I love you
Olivers hand grips the handle, ready to open the door and expose Marty for who he is.As the voicemail ends and Lucy finishes her apology, Oliver loosens his grip on the handle, and let's go.
